Also, remember that “Big Data” is the title of Star Trek: TNG themed slash fiction that is being written right now.

Another buzzword I’ve been seeing and being annoyed by lately is “data scientist.” Supposedly these exotic creatures are now much sought-after by companies eager to undertake “big data” projects. I feel like asking the people who use this term just what they imagine a non-data scientist would be. All the scientists I know spend lots of time collecting and/or analyzing data, so what are we talking about here, string theorists?
